Featured acts include ComedySportz Boston, Naffy Improv’s Your Terrible Ex!, Stand Up Break In, Laughing Liberally, and Matt & Ben.

Started on Halloween 2014, the theater is owned by Joe Gels of Improv Jones Boston. Recently celebrating 10 years as a group, they produce shows every first, third, and fifth Saturday of the month. Come see us soon!

Naffy is an indie improv team local to the Greater Boston Area. The team consists of veteran improvisers who have trained at various improv theaters including Upright Citizens Brigade, EndGames in San Francisco, and ImprovBoston. Naffy performs a weekly FREE show at The Riot Theater on Fridays, 10pm.

what is long form improv?

We’re glad you asked. Long form improv is a series of unscripted scenes created by improvisers, inspired by suggestions from their audience. Hilarious characters and stories spring to life live on stage:

Lifeguards finding love at ribbon cutting ceremonies; Precocious baby squirrels deciding to bury nuts a little differently in a new forest; Werewolf gambling addicts charm flight attendants into letting THEM fly the plane.

Drawn from anything from quick anecdotes or a single word, improvisers create endlessly entertaining tales of victory, friendship, inspiration, love, and everything in between.

why??

“Why?” is an important question to ask in a long form improv scene: why did these characters pick this spot? Why does this time matter? Why are they acting this way? Why do we care?

The most important question is Why did we organize the Jamaica Plain Improv Festival?
  1. We LOVE long form improv. Everything is created on the spot: the scenes, the characters, the games, the rules. We wanted to highlight long form in Boston. While there are many comedy festivals in Boston, none are focused on long form improv - JPIF is that festival.
  2. We LOVE Jamaica Plain. The best way we know to give back is through comedy and every group in the festival is hungry to make their shows hilarious and memorable. Without the community, we're performing for ourselves!
  3. We LOVE the Riot Theater. The Riot is home to many weird, off-shoot alternative comedy shows. It allows performers to experiment, get weird, and explore things that have never been done - all at an affordable cost to performers and for audiences to see. Funds raised by the festival will go towards infrastructure improvements for the Riot, including stage repair, sound and lighting equipment updates, and sound proofing measures.
